The Pinacoteca Giovanni e Marella agnelli in torino, italy will be presenting “adventures with objects: alexander von vegesack collecting design” from march 20th to july 6.
With over 300 objects, the exhibition traces the history of 20th century design through the eyes of collector Alexander von Vegesack, the founder and director of the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany (near Basel in Switzerland). The collection includes mass-produced pieces, one-offs and prototypes of some of the most important 20th century designs. the show is being curated by mathias schwartz-clauss.

What is Etsy?

Etsy is an online marketplace for buying & selling all things handmade.

Its intention is to offer viable alternatives to mass-produced objects in the world marketplace, and to encourage consumers to be aware of the social and environmental implications of their purchases.

The connection between producer and consumer has been lost. Etsy has been created to help them reconnect, and swing the pendulum back to a time when we bought our bread from the baker, food from the grocer, and shoes from the cobbler.

Etsy’s Beginning

Etsy was conceived by Rob Kalin (27) in early 2005. A painter, carpenter, and photographer, Rob found there was no viable marketplace to exhibit and sell his creations online- other E-commerce sites having become too inundated with fraud, overstock electronics, and broken appliances. Ever industrious, he, along with Chris Maguire (25) and Haim Scoppik (27), designed the site, wrote the code, assembled the servers, spliced the cables, and launched Etsy on June 18th, 2005 after only three sleepless months.

Brooklyn-based Etsy now has 48 full-time employees, approximately 650,000 registered users, 60,000 of whom are individual artists selling more than 950,000 of their handmade creations.

Paris Antique Shop Au Bon Usage has strong Thonet roots as it is specialized in Thonet for over 25 years. [Update but it seems having closed shop somewhere in the 20ies]

I believe the photo shows the owner on one of the newly introduced city bikes of Paris.

The Furniture Collection Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam provides a comprehensive overview of the Stedelijk Museum’s furniture collecting activities from 1934 to 2000. It charts the rich collection, which includes work by P. Berlage, K.P.C. de Bazel, Piet Kramer, Gerrit T. Rietveld, Martin Visser, Piet Hein Eek and Marcel Wanders, as well as international furniture classics designed by Michael Thonet, Charlotte Perriand, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Marcel Breuer, Joe Colombo, Arne Jacobsen, Ettore Sottsas, Phillippe Starck and Ron Arad. Besides a complete overview of the furniture collection, this annotated catalogue includes an introduction to the history of the museum’s collection and exhibition activities. Furthermore a number of themes, such as international and Dutch icons, contrasts and evolutions, are discussed in short texts.

The spectacular presentation Kramer vs. Rietveld – Contrasts in the furniture collection, one of the opening exhibitions in the Stedelijk Museum’s temporary location on the Oosterdokskade is being organized to celebrate the publication of this massive descriptive catalogue.
