Cuoio by Eoos - Photo by Chair Blog
I Found Cuoio at the Walter Knoll booth at IMM Cologne 2011. The second photo of the lounge chair demonstrates that the decorators of a booth should not interfere with a chair. The additions obliterate a clear view on a clear design. The first photo is of the bar stool variant.

Cuoio leather, which gives the chair its name, and black powdered steel form the skin and frame. The cutouts in the seat and back surfaces are not only decorative, but have a form-giving function analogous to tailored clothes.

Muji Thonet no. 14 by James Irvine at 2011 IMM Cologne (10)

Muji Thonet no 14 Interpretation by James Irvine

I was reasonably late to show you this Thonet no 14 interpretation by James Irvine which Muji started to sell in 2009 already. Therefore I’m glad I found it in front of my camera at IMM Cologne 2011 to publish it here. Especially because there are more recent reinterpretations of the no 14, like the Österlen by Inga Sempé, the Sealed Armchair by Francois Dumas and the Vigna Chair by Martino Gamper.

They are the result of R&D into an accessible and affordable mass production process. The chairs’ structure consists of three extruded plastic rods rendered flexible by heating them in a kiln. After having been formed, the parts are connected using a welding technique which seals the junctures by melting the plastic.

The production process is nicely demonstrated by this video from Designboom:

Update: I had already noticed the chair on Shapeaways as I found the reference between my draft posts when weeding them out ….

Found this all purpose Rip Chair by German architects and product designers Laufer and Keichel at the IMM Cologne 2011 booth of schneiderschram. It’s stackable and made of full wood, hence not a light chair. The wooden slats are connected with tension rods that give it a comfortable seating flexibility.
