Stitching Concrete Chair by Florian Schmid

Stitching Concrete by industrial design graduate Florian Schmid is a collection of stools made from a material called Concrete Canvas. It consists of cement layered between fabric and a PVC backing that can be manipulated for a few hours when wet and then hardens.

Schmid shapes the Concrete Canvas and then stitches the edges together with bright colored threads, making the stools look like stitched pieces of folded fabric.

From the designer:

Stitching Concrete combines the softness of cloth with the stability of concrete. Once brought in the final shape, you just have to water the material and within 24h it will alomst harden out completely. The challenge was to get into the material and bring it from its rawness to something new. Approching trough patterns, origami and stitchings a unique series of stools got born. Waterproof, fireproof, resistant against UV, durable. The fibre reinforcement makes it strong and the cloth gives back a warm atmosphere.

Concrete “Soft” Chair by Anne-Mette Manelius

Concrete Cloth Chair by Anne-Mette Manelius

Concrete Cloth Chair by Anne-Mette Manelius - Detail

I found this blog Concretely by Danish architect Anne-Mette Manelius. As she shares part of her name with my daughter she earns a plus. She is also obsessed by concrete. So obsessed that she wrongly claims concrete is the “most used building material in the world”. That, Anne-Mette, is not true, as the most used building material in the world is adobe, or simple clay or earth.

Nevertheless Anne-Mette has created a concrete chair whereby she has formed it as if it is an upholstered chair covered with a soft fabric, the texture of which she has applied to the concrete. Mind Boggling Indeed.

Concrete Chesterfield Sofa by Gray Concrete

UK-based Gray Concrete created this concrete Chesterfield sofa for exhibiting at 100% Design London. The sofa is made by taking a mold from a real Chesterfield, which is then used to make a glass textile reinforced casting. The cushions are a part of the casting. Before making the mold, the padding inside the cushions was replaced with a rigid foam which was modeled to make “bum prints.”

I wonder how comfortable it is!
