Scandinavian design has always been known for its uniqueness and exceptional sense of style, both of which are apparent in the work of Källemo- Sweden’s best-known avant garde furniture design company.
Most of their furniture comes in limited edition – as for instance the Birdland chair, designed by Mats Theselius, whose work is a fusion of design and art. The chair comprises a birch veneer backrest, chrome, steel, corian armrest and local Swedish Tärnsjö leather and has its background in Theselius’ passion for music, hinting at the beauty and complexity of a drum kit. The best bit, however, is that the chair has actually incorporated pieces of a drum set with its leg construction, drum skin and choice of materials, transforming the musical instrument into a unique piece of furniture.

Never knew Mats Theselius designed an official state armchair for the Russian Federation.
Different types of embroidery on velvet. The russian state weapon, the double eagle. Silver ornaments hand chased by silversmith Sebastian Schildt and covered by gold. Carved armrests by woodcarver Carsten Nilsson made of pear wood.
Mats Theselius unique custom-made armchair for the state of Russia.

I got the idea when visiting St Petri Church in Klippan, together with my students last October. It is the last church Lewerentz draw, and, in mine and many others opinion, it is one of the most interesting pieces of architecture in Sweden.
The old copper roof was being replaced; immediately I thought to do something with the copper tiles together with Källemo.
The copper patinated sheets cover the outside of the chair. The chair is a play with, and a free interpretation of Lewerents ideas and materials used for the church.
The chair is very “non upholstered”. It consists of many independent parts not very much relating to each other, but together they form the chair. This is also how I experience the architecture.
To the chair there is also a special designed and jacquard woven textile related to the mosaic floor pattern like an alter cloth.
The chair is made in a limited edition of 123 pieces. This is how many copperplates we recovered.
