Graduate Diploma Elective. The initial brief developed was to investigate the use of different materials in construction. Inspired by the work of Shigeru Ban, I set out to prove that peoples perception of various materials was unjust. During the duration of the project I investigated through research and physical experimentation the properties of various materials before settling upon corrigated cardboard and its possible uses. The idea of the chair developed as it posed some of the same problems which Shigeru faced with his buildings. Principally the “I’m not standing (sitting) on that.”. Peoples perceptions are that because we can bend cardboard by hand, it must therefore bend under our hands. After months of development, starting with scale models and then working up to full scale, the finished product concentrated on forming an aesthetically pleasing piece of design, not just a proof of concept. It received an excited reception from the whole school of design at the end of year show. Currently being sold as one off items. (via Cardboard Chair : Roger Reeves)
