Enzo Iorio, one of the participants, asked me to have a look at Ri-Parliamone.it

Enzo came together with a group of creative friends on occasion of their participation in the Cartasia 2010 Biennial of Contemporary Art which will be held in Lucca, Italia from June 19 – July 18, 2010.

It gave them the opportunity to rethink the use of old books that are about to end in a trash bin. They decided to give the old books a second life as chairs. The installation by Ri-Parliamone was showcased during a preview of the 2010 Biennial in Lucca from September 5 – October 3, 2009.

The books are soaked in a solution of water and vinyl glue to give them the necessary rigidity and resistance. Once dry they are given a coat of water-based paint. Subsequently they are assembled on a pallet, glued together and connected internally by a small metallic structure which guarantees its stability.
Being exposed to all weather conditions for a month, a transparent coat of water resistant paint is given for further safety.

apart from reading books, we can sit comfortably on a “mountain” of books

Thank you, Enzio! Great Idea!

Cave Book Case Seating by Sakura Adachi

cave_bookcase seating by Sakura Adachi

The Cave is a clever combination of bookcase and reading space, designed by Sakura Adachi. Putting a reading chair right in your bookshelf is an incredibly logical idea, even if you’ll need a pretty massive bookshelf to do it. It doesn’t look like the most comfortable idea in the world, but at least Adachi had enough sense to include a reading light at the top of the curved cavity, so points there.

Unlike many unusual bookshelf projects, the Cave is actually available for purchase. At $7,045 a pop, it’s not exactly aimed at the Ikea crowd, but there’s also a smaller, kids version that costs $4,830. I doubt I’d fit in either, but I appreciate a bookcase that also serves as an icon for a love of reading.

Just because you don’t enjoy reading a good book, doesn’t mean there aren’t many other uses for all of those books piled up in the attic.

Half Moon Wing Chair by Louis Saul

The Half Moon Chair is a wing chair by designer Louis Saul. And, I agree with DeZona that it’s reminiscent of Batman. But, that’s not all about it! It also features avantgarde design with skeleton-like seat cushioning made from bright orange sponge rubber and it comes with a matching ottoman. And, both the chair and the ottoman also feature storage space for your books. No word on price can be had.
