Chairs, Chair Design and Chair Designers
I took the photo of the Aluminum Rietveld Chair in the Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum for Modern Art which has a large chair collection. I find the use of aluminum atypical for Rietveld, but he did research all sorts of material for his chairs. Vitra Design Museum has one as well and suggests this chair originally was designed to be made of fiber board…
I’m kind of proud a Google search Berlin Chair by Rietveld results in a first place for a photo featured in a prior post.
Finally I’ve my own photo’s of the very chair. The Stedelijk in Amsterdam has one.
In addition there is one up for sale at Phillips today.
Estimate £12,000 – 18,000.

Inspired by The 2011 Rietveld Year music inspired designers collective D-W-A has taken it up to reinterpret Rietveld’s Red and Blue Chair, inspired so by different music genres.
The reDesign project is based on a 12” vinyl single release and is realized at a scale of 1:3 so as to keep the pieces around 12″. This iconic chair has been interpreted according to various musical genres including pop, classical, chill-out and dub.
