Österlen by Inga Sempé for Gärsnäs

Österlen chair

French designer Inga Sempé will present this ash Österlen chair for Swedish brand Gärsnäs at the Stockholm Furniture Fair in Sweden next week.

Called Österlen, the chair has slices cut out of the bent back and round legs to make a comfortable backrest, create neat joints with the square plywood seat and sharpen the line of the legs.

In the D3 Design Exhibit at IMM Cologne 2011: Sealed Armchair by François Dumas

They are the result of R&D into an accessible and affordable mass production process. The chairs’ structure consists of three extruded plastic rods rendered flexible by heating them in a kiln. After having been formed, the parts are connected using a welding technique which seals the junctures by melting the plastic.

Update: I had already noticed the chair on Shapeaways as I found the reference between my draft posts when weeding them out ….

Piet Mondrian Seated in his Paris Studio

Piet Mondrian Seated in his Paris StudioPiet Mondrian on a chair in his studio in Paris. Piet was a painter. Not so much a chair designer. However he was a highly influential member of the Dutch De Stijl group of architects, artists and designers. Another prominent member of the movement was Gerrit Rietveld. So Piet Mondrian (who was born as Piet Mondriaan) is a welcome addition to my Chairchez L’Homme – or Search the man with a chair – category.

R4 Chair by Stokkeaustad

R4 Chair by Stokkeaustad. I have a feeling yellow becoming en vogue nowadays. I’ve another yellow in my sleeve.

Prototype, 2005
Inspired by the sloping hood of the classic Renault R4, the seat of the R4 seems to be sloping in the wrong way. The curvature of the seat ensures a correct and comfortable seating position however. It is a relatively small chair intended for kitchens. Made from laminated birch, and lacquered.
