I’ve been browsing IMM Cologne irl (In Real Life) for chairs yesterday, January 23, 2011. I’ll post about it as a series at 2011 IMM Cologne (1) etc.

The first chair that asked my attention is this Speedster by long time Dutch designer Gerard van den Berg. Just before I decided to pay IMM a visit, I was wondering why I hadn’t published anything from his hand, because some of his chairs are very comfy. Nowadays Gerard produces some of his designs himself under the name Label.nl.

Infinity Chair by Vadim Kibardin

Another DESIGN AND DESIGN 2011 winning design by Vadim Kibardin, who seems to have a good chance of becoming one of the chair designers whose careers I enjoy following. The Infinity Chair pictured above is nothing like Vadim’s Angel Chair from a few posts back but is just as unique. The plywood chair’s shape and form pay homage to the infinity symbol yet interpret it in a whole new way. Makes me think of infinity in 3D.

Liquid Bench by Ross Lovegrove

Liquid Bench by Ross Lovegrove

Lovegrove describes the process of designing the Liquid Bench as being similar to animation — he envisioned slowly pulling a block of liquid aluminum apart, and then snapped a freeze-frame picture to capture the final form. The bench is actually milled from a solid block of aluminum and finished with a mirror polish.
