Capo by Doshi Levien for Cappellini – Milan 2011 (18)

One more design for the Milan Design Week 2011 is the first collaboration between London based studio Doshi Levien and Italian design brand Cappellini.The shape of the chair called Capo came from the image of a dapper gentleman in a well-cut suit and a felted hat.

With its tabular base, tall back, upturned lapel and cantilevered flexible arms the Capo armchair might remind you of another design week product – Pod Chair by Benjamin Hubert we posted about earlier. Just like Pod is said to be a private chair, Capo is said to provide shelter and “envelope” the sitter, “trasforming them into a boss”. Notice how both chairs come in felt, what seems to be a hot trend with seating furniture right now!

Regular readers know I’m a huge fan of Maarten van Severen who passed away much to early in 2005.

Oops! I’ve had to change some posts here, because I had misspelled Maarten van Severen’s name. My first mistake was that I believed that his name was Van Seventer, then I thought it was Van Sevener….all wrong. I believe the reason was the wrong connotation it has with the Dutch word Zeveren, which means so much as nag or moan. Sorry Maarten. Anyway I pinched this photo from the Vitra site which is getting better and better nowadays while they use less and less flash…

Flying Chair by Phillip Grass


The Flying Chair

is designed by Phillip Grass and is a digital prototype for a fiberglass chair with an upholstered foam seat. This sculptural concept is meant as a sort of pilot seat on the flight to relaxation and perhaps a bit of dreaming. The design looks good, but is quite big, and I’m pretty sure that a piece so shiny like this would cost a lot of money.
