Some languages, for instance Dutch and German, use the word “bank” for both a bank (the building as well as the company) and for a bench. Foster and Partners have built a new office for a Moroccan bank around an striking concrete bench that functions as a centerpiece of the building. It is placed under the dome – frequently used in Moroccan buildings – and connecting with it.

Concrete Cloth Chair by Jakub (Kuba) Szczęsny

Polish designer Jakub (Kuba) Szczęsny of Centrala Design has another take on concrete canvas as material for a chair. He simply put the cloth in cardboard tubes and wetted them.

The chair was developped in a designers in residence program Rooted Design for Routed living, bringing together Norwegian and Polish designers.

Here is an extensive interview with him. It is clear Jakub is inspired by the Dutch Ruff:

Concrete LC2 by Stephan Zwicky

With the motto “Grand confort, Sans confor, Dommage a Corbu”, or “Sorry Corbu, a Grand comfort without comfort” Stephan Zwicky created this Concrete LC2.

I had featured this chair earlier, but the reason I repeat it is that it wasn’t until I read Fabio Novembre’s blogpost that I realized this was an ode to le Corbusier.

Concrete Canvas Bench Medusa by Erasmus Scherjon

Young Dutch designer Erasmus Scherjon who graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven last year with this chair as a graduation project has named it Bench Medusa.

This outdoor two-seater bench looks soft, but is hard as a rock.
I used materials with unexpected qualities to create a new vocabulary of forms.
The bench is made of a steel frame covered with Concrete Canvas,
a cement-filled nylon fabric.
In Medusa I have fused steel and cement by dipping the bench in water,
after which the upholstery has turned into rock-hard concrete and the bench had petrified,
without losing its textile appearance and tactility.

More and more designs in the new material Concrete Canvas are filtering through nowadays, but Erasmus was one of the first. And: Yes! Julia’s Stitched Stool Post inspired me to finish this one which was on my back burner for quite some time already.

Update:

And here a photo that proves Medusa was part of the Design Academy Eindhoven graduation show:
