Soheimi Chair by Karim Mekhtigian

A bit untimey to be covering the Egyptian design fair from a year ago, but, as they say, better late than never, plus who better to cover it than someone who does love this country (I have 4 visits there under my belt to prove it!). So, here goes.

Curated by the widely appreciated Italian designer Paola Navone, +20 Egypt Design (June 3-7, 2010) showcased products both from the best Egyptian design companies and international brands to achieve the final result of an “emotional melting pot of different cultures.” The event is said to be a long-term project for the country to place Egyptian design as a rapidly emerging player onto the international design map.

The chair that caught my eye from +20 Egypt Design 2010 is the Soheimi Chair by Karim Mekhtigian of Alchemy Design Studio. With its distinctive cut out pattern and a wide curved seat, the Soheimi chair is a mix of the Egyptian culture and contemporary forms.
