Anthony Hartley/Frank Gehry Controversy, Solved

Our post on Mr. Smith the Second chair by Anthony Hartley sparked a conversation about the chair’s noticeable resemblance to the iconic Wiggle side chair designed in 1972 by Frank Gehry.

Today the Chair Blog is ready to answer your questions, with the help of Mr. Hartley himself:

“Frank was the first chair I made with a reference to Frank Gehry’s Wiggle from the Easy Edges line. The Mr. Smith and Mr. Smith the Second reference the Paul Smith stripes.”

Big thanks to Anthony for stepping in and helping us out!

The Sea Chair Project

The Sea Chair Project aims to solve the problem of plastic, one chair at a time. Creative minds behind the idea, Azusa Murakami, Alexander Groves & Kieran Jones, made a machine that collects and processes the plastic from marine debris, and are now looking for funding to turn a small fishing trawler into a fully functioning chair making factory – you can help by voting for them here.

From the creators:

“The Sea Chair is a project whereby we hope to collect the considerable volume of micro plastic that pollutes our seas and turn this waste into locally produced sea chairs.

We hope to do this with the help of Britain’s declining fishing fleet, by turning one Cornish fishing boat into a fully functioning plastic chair factory. Having been short-listed for the Victorinox 2011 Time-to-care award, we hope to secure enough funding to sail this boat across the open oceans fabricating chairs along the way.”

The Sea Chair Project will be exhibiting at The Dublin Science Gallery at the end of the year, and the series of chairs produced are to be exhibited at Milan 2012.

Vitra Factory Sale

Vitra is holding its first Factory Sale this coming September, which is a great chance to get an iconic chair or a few for less. During the sale day on the Vitra Campus, one would also be able to visit the Vitra Design Museum, the VitraHaus (by Herzog and DeMeuron) and see how the design classic, the Lounge Chair by Charles & Ray Eames, is manufactured.

On September 17th, the first ever factory sale is taking place on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein (D) from 9am till 6pm, just 7 km from Basel (CH). Products from the Home Collection and design classics, which have been on display in the VitraHaus or used for photo shoots will be up for sale with reductions of up to 65%!

Nobel Peace Price Chair by Tino Seubert 04 - The Sketch

Remember my post The Chair and The Nobel Price with The Empty Chair which was reserved for Liu Xiaobo who could not attend the ceremony, because he was detained by the Chines government?

The occasion has inspired young German designer Tino Seubert to design a Nobel Peace Price Chair. A nice one, I would say.

Tino Seubert was born on December 29, 1986 in Forchheim, a suburb of Nuremberg in Germany. He went to Bolzano (Italy) to study design. In Paris he spent a year doing graphic design and he worked there for a Gallery.
