And then you find yourself in the Anker Brotfabrik in Vienna where part of the premises are rented by Ernst Hilger, partly as a dependance for his Galery in the Dorotheer Gasse number 5, right in the center of Vienna and partly to show his own collection of Modern Art. Kindly we were shown around by his assistant Michaela Pedratscher who showed us this chair….And then you remember the name Patricia Piccinini….partly because you have seen earlier work of her…. and partly because you have taken earlier photo’s of her work…

Update: My first encounter with Patricia Piccinini was 10 years ago when she showed work in the now sadly discontinued The Hague Sculpture (Open Air Sculpture Exhibition):

P Tree Stool by Tanya Aguiñiga

Hah! Trying to feature a chair designed by Tanya Aguiñiga….The P Tree Stool is the tenth chair we feature from Tanya…sometimes you tend to forget..

About Tanya Aguiñiga

Tanya Aguiñiga (b. 1978) is a Los Angeles based artist/designer/craftsperson who was raised in Tijuana, Mexico. She holds an MFA in furniture design from Rhode Island School of Design and a BA from San Diego State University. In her formative years she created various collaborative installations with the Border Arts Workshop, an artists’ group that engages the languages of activism and community-based public art. Her current work uses craft as a performative medium to generate dialogues about identity, culture and gender while creating community. This approach has helped Museums and non-profits in the United States and Mexico diversify their audiences by connecting marginalized communities through collaboration.

Chairgate

It all started with the Bondage Chair by Allen Jones.

Which chair had to be remade by Bjarne Melgaard.

Last year the virtual world exploded when Russian socialite, fashionista and art collector Dasha Zhukova (married to Roman Abramowich) was pictured on Bjarne Melgaard’s version for an interview with Russian buro 24/7/. It was published on the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. which was wideley misunderstood and critisized on the internet. See for instance the Hollywood Reporter.

According to Art Info:

Melgaard and his dealer, Gavin Brown, are taking a different tack. In a statement sent to ARTINFO today, the pair called the photo of Zhukova “extraordinary” and said they “applaud both the sitter and the seated.” The duo goes on to say, “To fault the sitter, now in the age of the Anthroposcene, in the midst of extraordinary and REAL obscenities that threaten our actual existence, reflects a civilization that is not dying but already dead.”

The Urban wrote about a photoshoot for the Sir NY spring collection with an answer to the Melgaard chair.

And Pierluigi Vecchi linked me to a male white and male black models photo as an answer.

Finally hmvm mentioned the Proportion London with Rick Owens male model submitting himself as a model for a chair. This may close the (chair)gate…

Update

Not entirely. As I discovered this comical cartoon by Dutch Cartoonist Ruben Oppenheimer:

Putin seated on Rutte, the Dutch prime minister. “Citius Altius Fortius” is Latin for “Faster, Higher, Stronger”.

Elise Luttik is a Dutch designer based in Amsterdam who has named her design studio very cleverly (online search machines love it) Eli5e. She presented her Upside Down chair in Milan for the first time. Interestingly she is not a graduate from Eindhoven, but from Delft, Master Integrated Product Design, Delft University of Technology (2005 – Feb 2007).

As a prelude to another shocking chair episode this photo by US photographer Richard Kern which was published in his book Model Release

Some people see this as another piece of evidence of female suppression in art. I would say “Hiding from the photographer in the lavatory chair”
