Gamfratesi’s new Targa Lounge Chair for Thonet Vienna

Gebrüder Thonet Vienna GmbH, now known as Wiener GTV Design had invited Gamfratesi to create a small collection that reflected the clear tradition of bending wood and woven cane, but with contemporary aestethic and proportions.

The result is a sofa, chair and small writing desk. The collection has been presented during the Salone del Mobile in Milan 2015.

The Targa sofa was winner of the EDIDA – Elle Decor International Design Award as Best Furniture of the year in 2016

GamFratesi is the Danish/Italian design duo Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi. Their office is in Copenhagen.

Each of the pieces of this collection comes in striking but neutral colors that are bound to make a statement. The chairs are made of bent beech with an upholstered backrest and Vienna straw border. Soft and curvy, Targa is sleek and luxurious, but not too stuffy. Its round shape encourages intimate and cozy socializing, and is perfect for residential spaces with an unconventional twist.

Thonet Back in Vienna?

My first discovery of Thonet was in Vienna at the Kohlmarkt in the 70ies. Then Thonet Brothers Austria was a separate entity and had a posh interior shop there. Since then Thonet Brothers Austria had been acquired by the Italian furniture company Poltrona Frau, but Poltrona didn’t do a lot with it. It almost burried Thonet.

In Februari, 2013, in an article in the Austrian Die Presse I’ve read Thonet would come back to Vienna.

The place where Thonet was expected to open shop is Stilwerk which may be translated as Style Factory, an organization that offers four exclusive design centers in Hamburg, Berlin,  Düsseldorf and Vienna to offer luxury interior design, design products and lifestyle accessories a presentation platform under one roof.

However, looking at the Stilwerk site for Vienna, the Vienna Thonet Showroom is not shown there, whereas Ton is represented in Stilwerk….It seems the plans fell through. Too bad.

This was a photo that went with the article. Nice display i would say.

Actually I know there is at least one Thonet related person in our mailing list. Could he or she chime in here?
