The classical French oval chair originated in the Rococo period during the reign of Louis XV.

The Nopal cactus symbolizes Mexican heritage and national pride. According to legend, the Gods told the Aztecs to build Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City) in the place they saw an eagle standing on a Nopal, devouring a snake. To this day, the image resides on the Mexico’s Cote of Arms.

Valentina used these two themes as a fusion of her two cultures.

Valentina Glez Wohlers is a Mexican born and London based designer. Born in Mexico City in 1977, Valentina studied industrial design and graduated with honours from the Iberoamerican University in 2000. Can you help me identify this chromed Steel Mystery Easy Chair? Update: Mystery Solved

One of my readers asked me to help her identify this mystery chair a couple of which she’s owned for over 30 years and sent me these photo’s.

Can you help identify these chairs?

I’m giving you details of these photo’s so that you can see it is not a swivel chair and has a peculiar nut and bold connection of the legs with the central rod.

Also the way the canvas or leather seating is connected with the legs is typical and nifty.

I like the design and have a feeling they are really comfy to lounge in.

Update October 20, 2010

New Paris Metro Benches (2)

Paris-Metro-Chairs-Renovated-_MG_1191

Just returned from a couple of days in Paris. Some time ago I started (and discontinued temporarily) a series about new Paris Metro Benches. Well this is a fine photo of the new round chair form benches in red against a background of an old photo showing how they built a metro in those days…

In addition to my prior remark that it possibly was aimed at the sleeper problem I now can add that they didn’t get rid of the problem entirely as in several stations they kept the tiled consoles of the original wooden benches which still are in use by several clochards. However in some stations they replaced the consoles with steel frames with seatings without any place for sleepers… Moreover it seems they positioned the seatings in a way that people do not feel intruded upon if you take a seat next to them…as opposed in the Metro’s themselves where the benches are so narrow they barely can hold two Frenchman…

Scott White has a nice looking site but again an horrible one for bloggers…too much Flash. Same old error all over with those designers. But I like his URL Go Home and Sit. Under the same alias you can find him on twitter as @GoHomeandSit

I forgive him, as he send me some nice photos of his New Danas…I presume he means New Danes…

Red Blue Lego Chair by Mario Minale for Droog Design at Phillips de Pury

Red Blue Lego Chair by Mario Monale

This Red Blue Lego Chair by Mario Monale Minale after Gerrit Rietveld for Droog Design is for sale at Phillips de Pury. Estimate £20,000-25,000.

Added September 14, 2009:

It appears I made an error in this post, the same error Phillips de Pury made: The designer is not Mario Monale, but Rotterdam based Mario Minale of the Minale Maeda studio.

Here is a detail of the chair:
