Merlot Chair by Marta Del Valle Hernandez.

I got a tip about this chair by a friend, Susie Murphy Hemsworth, an Irish girl living in Paris who – like me – has (or had) a single subject blog, not about chairs, but about tables.

The Merlot chair is designed by Marta Del Valle Hernandez.

Marta del Valle is an interior & product designer with a unusual profile. She was previously devoted to the world of animated movies, so sensitivity for both art and color are always reflected in her work. She likes to create spaces that are fun to live, and if possible, fresh and timeless (like good music).

She spent her childhood in the coast of Granada (Andalusia), and since little got immersed in her father’s architecture (Jesús del Valle) and the colourful surroundings. Nothing can make her happier than taking action in a creative process, no matter what it is… from hand painted sheets for a newborn, to an interior design for a dentist. Therefore she has always tried to participate in all kinds of projects.

At the moment she works and continues to grow as a professional with her father, but her dream is to work with a company of young creatives in the big city.

Chair Art by Jan Svankmajer

Chair Art by Jan Svankmajer

Jan Svankmajer had an overview exhibition in Eye Amsterdam, a film Museun.

One of the great Czech filmmakers, JAN SVANKMAJER was born in 1934 in Prague where he still lives. He trained at the Institute of Applied Arts from 1950 to 1954 and then at the Prague Academy of Performing Arts (Department of Puppetry). He soon became involved in the Theatre of Masks and the famous Black Theatre, before entering the Laterna Magika Puppet Theatre where he first encountered film. In 1970 he met his wife, the surrealist painter Eva Svankmajerova, and the late Vratislav Effenberger, the leading theoretician of the Czech Surrealist Group, which Svankmajer joined and of which he still remains a member.

Svankmajer made his first film in 1964 and for over thirty years has made some of the most memorable and unique animated films ever made, gaining a reputation as one of the world’s foremost animators, and influencing filmmakers from Tim Burton to The Brothers Quay.

Compression Marble Sofa by Paul Cocksedge

Compression Sofa by Paul Cocksedge is what you get when you compress a block of foam and then recreate it in marble.

Sit Still by Eline Brouwers

Sit still by Eline Brouwers

At first glance you do not realize that it’s meant to sit on this chair. It creates the illusion to fall apart. I started with the frame, from there I started to design. In the end I chose to use old paintings in order not to make the essence of the frame disappear. This chair consists entirely of recycled materials.
