The warp and woof threads arrangement allowed Yael and Shay to unravel and release threads from within the woven fabric, creating a hollow sleeve inside its surface. The designers then placed two layers in different colours on top of each other and re-stitched them together using transparent plastic strip. As a result, a colourful rim had appeared from the other layer, reminiscent of the selvedge that can be found as the hem of raw fabrics. Usually only found decorating the edges of a textile while on the roll, the selvedge is generally cut from the fabric and not part of an end product. In this project Raw Edges is celebrating it, and have used the linear elements of the fabric to dictate the form of an armchair. The fabric is stretched to the structure of the armchair by these newfound “unravelling parts”.

I felt I needed to share their Pleated Pleat by Raw Edges Design Studio first to demonstrate Yael Mer’s occupation with foldeable material. In Tailored Wood for Capellini she uses wood veneer that is filled with foam and the wrinkling process resulting from the foam injection gives each piece a different look and feel.

I was almost certain we had featured the Stool, chair and lounger upholstered with pleated Tyvek by Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay of Raw Edges Design Studio here already…Not so. Pleating allows flat, non elastic materials to become a springy, three dimensional cushion when filled with soft polyurethane foam. That is what they did here.
Notably I’ve found an entire blog dedicated to pleating: Pleat Farm, which to my pleasure, has a Chairs section as well.

The Coiling Collection by Raw Edges

Raw Edges, a collaboration between Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay is currently presenting their Coiling furniture collection at the Fat Galerie in Paris. They made each piece of furniture by coiling strips of felt around wood structures and coating one side with silicon which soaks into the fibers to create rigid forms.
