Bram Stoker’s Chair series by Sam Taylor-Wood

Sam Taylor-Wood is a UK based celebrity photographer and cineast who made this extraordinary series of sexy lady photographs without any nudity. An excellent example of my Chairchez La Femme category. Note the absence of a shadow from the chair.

And note:

Women artists have invented new ways of representing the body, going against the grain of accepted representational standards in taking on the human figure. Professor Linda Nochlin, New York University Institute of Fine Arts, examines certain women painters, photographers, sculptors, performers and video artists who have worked with the body and made it new, and critically analyses their revisions of a long, male-dominated tradition. Geological Society Lecture Theatre, Piccadilly, W1; 6.30–7.30pm

And Note:

Taylor-Wood’s series Bram Stoker’s Chair is so-called because the chair in question, which magically supports her contortions in each photograph, casts no shadow, like Dracula himself. However, the idea of female sexuality liberated from the constraints of Victorian society is relevant when we consider how these images have been constructed and choreographed. For both the Bram Stoker’s Chair and Self Portrait Suspended series, Taylor-Wood was trussed up by a bondage expert in constrictive harnesses and hung from wires attached to the ceiling for hours on end while performing her poses. The final images of seemingly effortless acrobatics were heavily doctored using computer manipulation, releasing her body from the bondage and supporting cables to float freely in mid-air. The female artist then, is claiming full control over her self-image, counteracting the traditionally male gaze of the camera as well as more perverse experimentations by artists such as Hans Bellmer, who constructed his own life-size doll with limbs that he could manipulate at will, declaring: I shall construct an artificial girl whose anatomy will make it possible to recreate physically the dizzy heights of passion…

The Object of Desire, Sweet Jane – A Corset inspired Lounger by Charlie Davidson

UK-based designer Charlie Davidson ‘s The Object of Desire, Sweet Jane is inspired by the form of a corset.

Davidson began the project a few years back, developing initial concept drawings to produce the first scale mock-ups and a number of 3D computer visualization.
Upon a visit to Vollers corset company – into producing corsets since the 19th century – the shape and form of the lounge really began to develop.

Although I like the corset story, I have a feeling there is some similarity in design with the Orgone Stretch Lounge by Marc Newson.

RE: cover (a Chair) or Dress a chair well by Fredrik Farg

RE:cover – costume making dresses for old chairs.
The project looks to the beauty of those shapes that not always have to change. Fredrik is inspired by classic menswear, such as suits and dinner jackets that never go out of style. -This is a lasting fashion; he says and refers to today's trend wear which is often discarded before being worn out.

I found this on Fredrik’s Picasa photo set Stockholm Furniture Fair 2009.

Chairchez La Femme – The Seaser Chair by Lonc

On June 3, 2010, this Seaser Chair by Lonc will be launched…in The Hague, where Lonc resides.

This is an ancient style postcard that Lonc creatively uses to promote it’s Seaser Chair. It inspired me for the first part of the title: Chairchez La Femme.

Chairchez is approximately how the French pronounce cherchez which means as much as “look for” or “search”. La Femme is French for The Lady. I mean: If the lady catches your attention, maybe the chair does as well. Lonc very creatively uses the ancient style postcard as a means of creating various persona who could identify themselves with the Seaser. The Lady is one of them. On another forum I’ll go deeper into this marketing technique and the other persona Lonc uses.

About Lonc
Lonc or Lonc, Living Products is a new furniture design label that also will be launched on June 3, 2010 by two Dutch dutch industrial designers Rogier Waaijer and Bartel Hulst. I’m sure you will see more of them in the future.

Introducing the Chairchez La Femme Category
At the occasion of this post I’ve introduced another category for this blog. One that researches the relation between chair marketing and a beautiful lady, sometimes scantly dressed…much better than other possible names…I’ll go back into the archives and tag a couple of old posts so that the category gets a meaning.
