Konstantin Grcic at the Then Now Show of The Aram Gallery

The Aram Gallery is another source of inspiration for chair lovers.

The Gallery originated from pasion for design rather than from financial motives:

Zeev Aram opened his first store on London’s Kings Road, Chelsea, in 1964. He had a real passion for design and was the first to introduce the works of designers such as Carlo Scarpa, A & P.G. Castiglioni, Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier and V. Magistretti to the UK market.

Later on Zeev developped the concept of an Annual Graduate Show to offer young designers and the industrie a platform to meet each other. Recently this culminated in a THEN-NOW Show which was an exhibition of 15 designers who were originally amongst the graduates selected by Zeev Aram to take part in the Aram Design’s Annual Graduate Shows in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This exhibition revisits the work of these designers to show the development of their career over the last 2 decades. Their graduation work and recent work were showed side by side.

Actually I like the format of Popular posts of March 2011. Therefore I repeat it here on the basis of our feedburner stats. I hope you like it too.

Visits (53,729) and pageviews (120,765) were slightly down from March, despite the fact that March started with some considerable down time which we luckily haven’t seen in April.

Maybe due to the fact that we published 15 posts less than in March (85 versus 100) or to the fact that April gave us considerably better wheather than March.

Let’s see what May brings us all.

Serena & Lily Poufs and Ottomans

Came across the sweet and lovingly made furniture pieces by the USA based Serena & Lily and was especially drawned to their beautifully crafted low seats – made to order, they look like they could have been some royal family’s beloved possesion in the past. Two of my personal favorites are:

Moroccan Leather Pouf works double duty as a footstool or extra seating. Handmade by artisans in Morocco, each one is unique, with subtle variations in color, where individual pieces of leather are dyed to perfection, then stitched together and embroidered by hand.

Chakki is a cross between an ottoman and a stool inspired by traditional Indian mills used to grind wheat and other grains. The base, which is made in India, is solid mango-wood finished with low-VOC stain in dark walnut or painted white. The plush cotton cushion can be slipcovered in any of the 12 upholstery fabrics offered.

Plantation Chair by Georgina Brett Chinnery

The Plantation Chair by Georgina Brett Chinnery is an “antique Georgian frame covered with natural hand tooled leather featuring a tree design, finished with close nailed nickel studs and a hand stitched cushion (not shown in the picture)”.

The chair is part of Georgina’s new collection “Flora and Fauna” and is on show in the Project Space at Collect, The International Art Fair for Contemporary Objects, 6-9 May at the Saatchi Gallery in London.
